Allergy & Asthma Network is joining national health organizations in urging Congress to adopt transportation policies that reduce both harmful air pollution and climate pollution.
Specifically, the groups are urging Congress to support a national transition to electric vehicles and a related fueling infrastructure.
According to a poll cited in the group’s letter to Congress, public interest in purchasing electric vehicles is increasing. Private industry is also recognizing the health and economic benefits of transitioning to zero-emission vehicles, the letter says.
The transportation sector is a leading contributor to air pollution. It is also the largest source of carbon pollution in the United States. Air pollution affects everyone’s health. It can lead to a worsening of chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD. Air pollution has a greater impact on our most vulnerable populations, including children, older adults, low-income communities and people of color.
“Zero-emission vehicles and an associated fueling infrastructure are a critical part of the solution,” the groups write in a letter to Congress.
The groups also urge Congress to expand public transit and opportunities for walking, biking and other modes of active transportation.
