Congress Increases Funding for Asthma and Allergy Programs In 2022 Budget

Allergy & Asthma Network applauds both chambers of Congress and President Biden for passing the 2022 budget. The measure increases funding for asthma and allergy programs. It supports research, education and outreach initiatives at:

• U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
• U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
• U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
• U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)

The budget passed both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate in early March 2022. It was signed into law by President Biden on March 15.

Federal health programs support asthma and allergy awareness, management and research. They help ensure all Americans receive quality and safe healthcare. This is especially important for people with chronic conditions such as asthma.

The FY22 Consolidated Appropriations bill (Public Law 117-103) includes:

• U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): $8.5 billion. Continue support for CDC asthma programs. This includes $30 million for the National Asthma Control Program and $10 million for climate and health programs.
• National Institutes of Health (NIH): $45 billion. Continue programs at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
• Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA): $8.9 billion. Support medical workforce programs.
• Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS): $4 billion. Administer Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
• HUD’s Healthy Homes Initiative: $90 million. Protect families from housing-related health and safety hazards.
• EPA’s Environmental Programs and Management: $2.96 billion. Continue asthma research, education and outreach initiatives. Support air and water quality management programs.
• DOD Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program: $370 million. Continue food allergy research in military health.
